Client’s wish list:

1.       Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired room

2.       A little drama/elegance

3.       Integrate Inspirational quotes

4.       A dedicated study area

5.       Maximize Storage area

The aesthetics of the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, is the inspiration behind many of the selections made for Alyssa’s bedroom.  My young client made the paint color selection easy. She just loves the Tiffany Blue Box packaging. We incorporated a designer trick to add visual height to the room by painting all trim detail the same hue as the wall.

One of the first elements selected and influenced by Holly Golightly’s Tiara was the capiz crown cornice. The accompanying white tulle sheers reference the white ribbon in Tiffany & Co’s branding.

We are using an existing upholstered headboard and have selected tailored, white bedding with a hint of the wall color to play up the beautiful walls. The shelving, nightstand, upholstered bench and desk are polished and neutral with soft edges and surfaces. A capiz floor lamp was selected to play off of the crown cornice and window coverings are custom and designed to blend into the wall (not a focal point). Butterflies are also aesthetically significant in the movie.  We have chosen a beautiful large format mirror with an elegant filigree frame featuring delicate butterflies all around it. The mirror placement will reflect back the crown cornice, wall and colorful accent pillows that work to ground the finish of the existing flooring and to reference many elements of the movie.

Client’s wish list:

1.       Room for an overnight guest

2.       A desk & chair

3.       A feature wall

4.       Pink as the main color choice

The first major decision made was the addition of a trundle bed. Once we determined that this would be the way to address overnight guests we then selected the bed style which is a relaxed, California style, child’s sleigh bed. The whimsical floral wall mural with an oversized floral motif works to visually increase the spaciousness of the room and becomes the inspiration for all of the room selections. We chose a dual-purpose, wall mounted desk to allow for the clearance of the trundle bed. Lighting selected adds just the right amount of sparkle and glow and the comfy bedding and accent pillows harmonize with the custom mural. White drapery panels are transformed with custom details to tie in the shade and the pink-hued walls.

Client’s wish list:

1.       Convert the office space with walkout to backyard into a bedroom a teenager would enjoy hanging with friends. An urban loft aesthetic.

2.       Room for an overnight guest

3.       The option to make the room function as both a lounging area & bedroom

4.       A desk

5.       A plasma TV

6.       Maximize Storage

7.       Address an obtrusive bulkhead

8.       Floor tile

The overall space is quite challenging due to existing window placement, an interior & exterior door and an extremely low bulkhead recessed in one of the walls. Our initial goal was to select the finishes that best addressed the room’s quirky layout. We installed luxury vinyl tile flooring with a modern linear wood grain pattern suitable for an urban loft setting to set the tone of the room.  We chose a dark wall color for the space incorporating the bulkhead so that the walls and surfaces would recede, giving the illusion that the wall is further back than it really is and to reduce the visual presence of the bulkhead.  The remaining three walls, trim and doors were painted a warm gray often found in urban lofts

To incorporate our client’s wish list, we selected a murphy bed with built in drawers and shelving for hanging clothing. The bed will be hidden away when entertaining and the sleep sofa installed under the bulkhead becomes the lounge area. With little uninterrupted wall space we chose a modern coffee table that can be raised to desktop height when Anthony is studying. We strategically placed recessed ceiling lights to eliminate shadows in the corners of the room (a designer trick to increase the room dimension) and black wall mount sconces in the lounge for ambiance. A gray box-quilted comforter and shams are the perfect accent for the space and are subtle enough not to take up visual space.
